I thought it fitting to feature the cover of Lena Horne's Christmas album as the New Year will mark the centenary of the singer, dancer, actress and civil rights activist.

Recorded in 1966, it was her final release whilst under contract to Universal Records following which there was a four year gap until her next album, Lena & Gábor which teamed her with Hungarian jazz guitarist Gábor Szabó.

LP Artwork: The Hi-Lo's Happen to Folk Music

When Frank Sinatra set up his own label - Reprise Records - quite a diverse range of artists came on board and initial releases included albums by Ben Webster, Jimmy Witherspoon, Tom Lehrer, Rosemary Clooney, Juan García Esquivel, Mort Sahl, Trini Lopez and close harmony group, The Hi-Lo's.

With rousing arrangements by Billy May, the highlights from this 1962 release include Turkey In the Straw, Careless Love and the selection included in this week's program, Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair.

LP Artwork: Big Joe Turner & Count Basie/The Bosses

This week's show includes the blues number, Night Time Is the Right Time. And the track is taken from one of the Pablo albums that Big Joe Turner recorded in the 1970s with Count Basie. Pure precision. Sensational sense of swing. Tight and always exciting.

How about this for band accompaniment: Ray Brown (b), Irving Ashby (g), Eddie Lockjaw Davis (ts), Zoot Sims (ts), JJ Johnson (tb), Harry Sweets Edison (tpt), Louis Bellson (d).

LP Artwork: Dinah Shore/Bouquet of Blues

There are certain covers which simply are a sign of the times and this 1956 release by Dinah Shore is one of them. It's right up there with her close friend Frank Sinatra's image on the seminal Songs for Swinging' Lovers! album and other issues that year.

The arrangements were by Frank DeVol, Harry Zimmerman and Henri Rene, and title track is featured in this week's program - complete with the haunting sound effect of lonely footsteps at the beginning and end of the recording.

LP Artwork: Bob Manning / Lonely Spell

For those who thought Frank Sinatra had all of the loneliest album covers sewn up, take a look at this one from the under-rated yet mellifluous Bob Manning. It's not as dark or sombre as Only the Lonely, In the Wee Small Hours or No One Cares, but it is equally atmospheric.

Indeed the photographer was Ken Veeder who also took the shot of Sinatra for his Songs for Young Lovers album cover three years earlier,  complete with hallmark streetlamp and smouldering cigarette.

As a Capitol Records staff photographer, he also took iconic photos of Sinatra during the January 16th recording session in 1956 for the seminal Songs for Swinging' Lovers! album.
